Babies cleared to enter the world with a splash in CQ

MUMS now have one more option available to them when they're choosing how to have their babies; from today Gladstone Hospital can accommodate water births.

It's been a long time coming with many women demanding the service be on offer in their hometown. Late last year the State Government confirmed it would make the necessary changes and training.

Queensland Health spent the holiday period training nurses in the new facilities. The first baby born in water at Gladstone Hospital will be the first in Central Queensland.

The nurses are excited; now all they need is an expectant mum willing to give the pool a go.

Acting nurse unit manager in the maternity ward Marnie Gallio said already pregnant women had shown interest in having a water birth.

"(Water birthing) is pretty mainstream in most hospitals across the world," Ms Gallio said.

"It's really important that we provide these birthing choices."

She said women wanting to use the new service will have the chance to express their interest during regular visits with the hospital, but warned there were some exclusions.

"Women do need to meet a set of criteria," Ms Gallio said.

"Those are all to do with the safety of the baby, for example, if you had to be induced with a hormone drip."

Gladstone maternity services are working on a new website to provide up-to-date information on birthing choices.

It is expected to be up and running within the next month.
