LIST: Australian made logo means "next to nothing"

An investigation by consumer group Choice has exposed a suite of favourite Aussie products whose companies claim are made in Australia, but actually aren't.

Select brands of pavlova, meat pies, lamingtons, among many other favourite Australian snacks sold at Woolworths, ALDI, or Coles, are the chief offenders, according to the Choice investigation.

In total, the investigation outed a total of 32 "quintessentially Aussie foods" on supermarket shelves where it was impossible to tell if these products actually used Australian ingredients.

Tim Tams are "Made in Australia" but the cocoa mass comes from West Africa; the cocoa butter is sourced in South East Asia; the palm oil comes from Malaysia; and, part of the sugar comes from Thailand.

Gladstone residents who helped clear Woolworths' shelves of lamingtons might've been duped into thinking they were buying local.

But the report found Woolworths Choc Lamington Fingers contained just 60 per cent Australian ingredients.

Woolworths "Select" lamingtons were made out of 53 per cent Australian products.

A spokesperson for Choice said that the "Australian-Made" logo "tells you next to nothing".
