Artist draws on flood of inspiring plant life
ARTISTS look everywhere for inspiration but Robyn Douglas didn't have to look much further than her own backyard.
The Roma artist has a stunning collection of botanical illustrations on display at the Roma on Bungil Gallery.
The exhibition, called Brigalow and Beyond, features illustrations of native Australian plants, almost all of which can be found close to Ms Douglas' property.
"I have lived in a rural environment for most of my life and our family is intimately involved with our landscape in the Brigalow woodland and semi-vine thickets north of Roma,” Ms Douglas said.
"I have observed these plants in the local environment, but they are not confined to this area and are to be found further afield in Queensland and in other parts of Australia.”
It was Roma's wild weather and flooding that provided the inspiration for Ms Douglas' illustrations.
"In 2010, as the seasons changed and above average rainfall fell, a transformation took place around me,” Ms Douglas said.
"Plants which we hadn't seen for thirty years were in profusion and I began to draw them.”
Ms Douglas' sketches, which take up to two years to complete, are highly realistic illustrations of plants at various stages of growth, flowering and fruiting.
Using coloured pencil on paper, Ms Douglas produced sketches so botanically accurate they were able to be identified by Craig Eddie, principal ecologist at Boobook.
"My purpose is to draw the plants in detail so that the particular characteristics for each plant are carefully recorded,” Ms Douglas said.
Brigalow and Beyond will be on display until December 18.
