Vandals deface council candidate signs on Fraser Coast

SWASTIKAS, devil's horns and moustaches have been drawn on council candidate campaign signs across the Fraser Coast.

As candidates ramp up their campaigning for the local election less than a month away, vandals have also ramped up their efforts to graffiti the faces of those running.

Division three candidate Paul Truscott is one of the latest to find extra features drawn on to his campaign photo.

He said while he could see the lighter side of the situation, he was disappointed.

"On that one, at least it's only a moustache and heavy eyebrows and a goatee," Paul said.

"Others have been a lot more vulgar."

He said many other candidates were having similar problems.

"On Lennox St, someone has taken 20 or so signs from all different people and just dumped them in one spot," he said. "Daniel Sanderson, James Hansen, Jeanette Maynes have had theirs stolen and it's disappointing."

Mayoral candidate Jannean Dean has had swastikas drawn on her signs, and said it a disrespectful thing for someone to do.

"There have been quite a few signs that have been damaged, you would expect it, but I think it's gone above and beyond being defaced, and it's illegal," Jannean said.

"I laughed it off as well; I took the high road rather than let it upset me."

An individual campaign sign costs about $15, and must be made and erected within certain state and local government guidelines.

Sign guidelines

All electoral advertising must be appropriately authorised and not mislead voters.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council governs where signs can be put up, including public and private land.
