Anti-nuclear graffiti on the roads around Oman Ama

ANTI-nuclear protestors could find themselves slapped with serious fines and clean-up costs as Inglewood police investigate graffiti around Oman Ama.

Police have confirmed anti-nuclear messages had been spray painted on roads and a number of privately-owned industrial bins.

Six separate reports of damage have been received from Coolmunda, Oman Ama and Gore.

The graffiti occurred between December 1 and January 5.

Sergeant Tim Hoffmann said the graffiti referred to the radioactive waste facility proposed in Oman Ama.

"Whilst it's an emotive issue in the town, it's still a crime," he said.

"We encourage residents to have a reasoned debate to relation to the issue and not resort to any criminal activity that could cost them a lot."

Sgt Hoffmann said anyone caught spraying graffiti could face substantial fines and charges, plus the cost of cleaning up.

The Friends of Oman Ama has distanced themselves from the graffiti.

Dr Colin Owen said none of the group's members were involved.

"This is certainly nothing that would be sanctioned by the Friends of Oman Ama," he said

"Our campaign is all above board and done in a proper manner.

"Graffiti is certainly not the right way to do things."

Anyone with any information into the graffiti should phone the Inglewood Police on 0419 736 172.
