Ann Leahy 'quietly confident' of an election win in Warrego
LNP candidate for Warrego, Ann Leahy has tonight said she is "quietly confident" of a victory.
With votes still being counted, Ms Leahy leads 63.37 per cent to the ALP's Mark O'Brien's 36.63 per cent.
Ms Leahy, who looks set to become the region's first female state representative, said numbers looked to be in her favour.
"The trend is looking really good and it's always good to finish the night ahead," she said.
The long-time staffer of the LNP's Howard Hobbs, who has retired after 29 years as local member, said she had big shoes to fill.
"I really do pay tribute to the things he's taught me about the electorate and about politics in Queensland," Ms Leahy said.
She said during her 21 years of working with Mr Hobbs the biggest lesson he had taught her was that the constituent was always right.
Ms Leahy said she had no idea on what leadership decision her party would make, with Campbell Newman losing his Ashgrove seat to Kate Jones.
"Boths sides (of politics) will have to wait and we really will have to be patient," she said.
The daughter of a Stanthorpe farming family with strong ties to the LNP, Ms Leahy said she didn't have any ambition of becoming Premier herself and was happy to look after the people of the Warrego.
