Anglican priest for new parish
Mitchell's new Anglican priest was formally welcomed at a special commissioning service at Mitchell Anglican Church on Saturday.
The Bishop of the Western Region Rev Rob Nolan was on hand to commission Father Peter Moore as the priest-in-charge of the new parish of Maranoa-Warrego Anglican District.
Father Moore said he had travelled widely with stints in Charters Towers, Argentina and Uruguay before coming to Mitchell.
"It's great to have my wife Alison by my side here and we look forward to spending our time among you,"
Fr Moore said. Bishop Nolan said Fr Moore's new parish was a huge area covering Mitchell, Charleville and Cunnamulla.
"We needed new thinking on how to manage parishes in the Western Region with declining numbers of priests," Bishop Nolan told the congregation.
"Peter came out to the region in April as an experiment for six months to see how it would go."
The Bishop said the experiment was a success and Father Peter told him he had the energy to look after the needs of a such a large area.
"But he cannot do it by himself, he will need the support of everyone in the community," the Bishop said.
Father Moore was welcomed by speeches from Bruce Scott MP, Father Peter Doohan of Charleville Catholic Church and local church wardens.
Fr Moore's daughter Christobel came out from Brisbane to play flute at the service accompanying organist Jennifer Crocker.
