Investigation underway into today's sudden prison death

UPDATE 3.50PM: Queensland Corrective Services can confirm that an investigation has commenced into the death of a prisoner at Capricornia Correctional Centre today.

The death is believed to be non-suspicious.

The 34-year-old male prisoner was located deceased in a detention unit at around 11.55 am.

The investigation is being conducted by the Queensland Police Service's Corrective Services Investigation Unit and the QCS's Office of the Chief Inspector.

As the matter is the subject of a police investigation, QCS can make no further comment.

Once the investigation is complete, the matter will be referred to the State Coroner for inquest, as is standard protocol for a death in custody.
 

UPDATE, 1 pm: The Rockhampton CIB is now investigating the sudden death of prisoner at the Capricornia Correctional Centre.

Scenes of Crime officers have also been called to the scene.

BREAKING 12.30PM: EMERGENCY services are responding to a serious incident at the Capricornia Correctional Centre.

Initial information suggest Queensland Ambulance crews are responding to the regional prison following reports of an incident involving a male prisoner.

Further reports suggest self-harm may be involved.
