Accused in Lindsay Ede case to have charge upgraded

THE charge against a Redbank Plains teen accused of assaulting a 55-year-old man who later died, will likely be upgraded to unlawful striking causing death.

Ariik Mayot had been charged with grevious bodily harm for an allegedly unprovoked, one-punch attack on grandfather Lindsay Ede in Goodna.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, crown prosecutor Ryder Reid asked for Mayot's case to be adjourned for two weeks so police could amend the charge, after the victim died in hospital last week.

It is likely Mayot, 19, will have his charge upgraded to unlawful striking causing death - an offence which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

It would make Mayot the first person to be charged with the new offence, which was created in Queensland following a string of one-punch attacks.

The matter was adjourned to August 5.
