OPINION: I don't buy the "I was drunk" excuse

ALCOHOL and violence go hand-in-hand, particularly when there are young men involved.

Tragically, we have seen the devastating outcome of that mix too often recently.

I've heard the argument several times that the root cause of the problem is not the actual violence, but alcohol. I personally don't entirely buy that theory.

Not that I endorse people getting blind drunk every evening (that's obviously an unhealthy and expensive option, and brings with it many other problems), but that statement is a sweeping generalisation and it does away with personal accountability.

The perpetrator can simply say "I was drunk", and somehow that is supposed to excuse them?

I believe this attitude is why there remains such a correlation between alcohol and the number of punch-ups.

Alcohol lowers inhibitions and yes, it makes people act out of character, but that should never be an acceptable excuse.

People who wouldn't hurt a fly when sober are not usually the ones throwing punches after a few beers anyway, in my experience.

Banning violent offenders from all Maryborough pubs is a great step forward, and I absolutely applaud the move.

But unless we change our culture so that young people understand that violence is entirely disgraceful, whether you're drunk or sober, it will be nothing more than a Band-Aid solution.
