ALCOHOL-fuelled violence remains one of the biggest issues in the region for police, and as the festive season gets into full swing, residents are being urged to take it easy.

Darling Downs Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said one of the most common offences police were called to deal with was alcohol-fuelled violence in the community.

"While drugs are a big issue in the community, alcohol-fuelled violence is a major issue," he said.

"Unfortunately over the last six months, assault offences have increased and most of those are related to some form of alcohol-related violence.

"I think the bottom line is that alcohol-fuelled violence is still one of our biggest issues."

Det. Insp. Isherwood said the recent spate of high-profile, and potentially deadly, situations in Toowoomba was indicative of the city growing, but added police had resolved them,

"This is just part of what happens in a society like Toowoomba that is no longer a small little country town," he said.

"We have people who are prolific criminals who come from Toowoomba and recently we've had outsiders come in to Toowoomba and commit offences.

"So what I'm trying to say is by no means is Toowoomba sheltered from criminal activity."
