Adrian Vowles Cup begins

CHARLEVILLE'S biggest footy event, the Adrian Vowles Cup, was officially kicked off this afternoon, bringing together hundreds of kids from teams across Queensland.

This year marks the sixth annual carnival, and this year it is bigger than ever.

Opening the event with a heartfelt speech, Adrian Vowles said he is proud of how far the competition has come over the years.

"Thank you to all the special guests here today, but particularly the players and their coaches and families who've driven all the way here to make this carnival what it is.

"I didn't really realise until I got up on this stage how many people were at this carnival, and when you go back to 2014 we only had 3 teams.

"This is absolutely amazing,” he said.

Founder Shaun Radnedge also took the mic at the opening.

"I'd like to thank you all for your attendance; it's good to look around and see the crowd here,” he said in his address to the gathered teams.

"This whole thing got started with a conversation.

"We had a bunch of about 8 or 9 boys who wanted to travel and play footy, and we just couldn't find anything around.

"I had a conversation with Adrian [Vowles] and said to him 'can I use your name', because obviously the Shaun Radnedge Cup wouldn't take off, I don't think, and Adrian was a bit more famous than I was,” he said.

The rest, as they say, is history, with the competition making waves in the rugby league community.

Over this weekend, 73 games of rugby league will be played.
