Oakey bike thief gets parole after weekend in custody

A MAN who hurled abuse at a city magistrate after having his matter adjourned for being too drug-affected in court has been given immediate parole after pleading guilty to unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

William John Currey, 27, first appeared in custody before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday charged with stealing a motorbike but after being found too affected by drugs, had the matter adjourned to Tuesday.

The court had heard a motorist had come across Currey and a juvenile boy pushing a 250cc dirt bike along a road at Oakey last Thursday night before the pair was given a lift to Goombungee.

The driver had overheard one of the pair say they had stolen the bike from an Oakey address, prompting the driver to inform police.

Currey was arrested at a Goombungee address and taken into custody for his court appearance on Friday to the charge of possessing tainted property to which he had pleaded guilty.

His solicitor had told the court the juvenile was more responsible for the theft which prompted a question from the sitting magistrate to which Currey said: "He ain't no f***in' juvenile."

Currey was remanded in custody over concerns he was too drug-affected to understand the court proceedings, which prompted him to call the magistrate an "old piece of sh*t", and the matter was re-listed for sentencing yesterday.

The possessing tainted property charge was struck out by police and replaced with the single charge of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Currey was sentenced to four months imprisonment, with immediate parole, with the five days spent in custody taken into account.
