Abbott approval rises ahead of second budget

AS TONY Abbott prepares for his government's second budget and latest political test, a poll shows voters are slightly happier with him as Prime Minister.

Mr Abbott's position as preferred PM is level with that of Labor leader Bill Shorten in the Newspoll, on 38%.

It is the highest rating Mr Abbott has held since before the Coalition's first budget some 12 months ago.

Both major parties' primary vote fell slightly in the past three weeks, to 35% for the Coalition and 39% for Labor.

On a two-party preferred basis, Labor leads the Coalition 52 to 48%.
