A young leader's next step

BENJAMIN Silva has set his sights on being a future leader of Australia.

The State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) is a multi-stage youth leadership development camp sponsored by PCYC, which began on Sunday.

The program, which takes place in the Gold Coast hinterland, brings together those passionate to contribute to society and trains them in skills to help their community.

For Mr Silva, embarking on SYLP level one, there was nothing casual about undertaking the course.

"It's a leadership camp, not just a holiday,” he said.

"We need to control our acts appropriately, to better ourselves and as young adults meet others who are responsible.”

SYLP level one is a six day camp, designed to test your emotions, intelligence and trust in a series of adventure activities.

Mr Silva said the activities are not just meant to be challenging for him but an opportunity to lead from the front.

"They're fun activities I'm sure, but they are all related to leadership,” he said.

"I'm looking forward to lead that group and have a positive reaction on them.”

Similar to the other prominent youth education program, the Duke of Edinburgh, those selected for SYLP one attend the course free of charge.

Having the program paid for made all the difference, said Mr Silva.

"If it was not all paid for I would not be able to go,” he said. "For someone like me who can't afford but has the want and urge to be a leader it's very lucky.”

The opportunity to hone his skills as a leader was not the only reason for undertaking the course, Mr Silva said.

"As I am Brazilian, my communication skills could be a lot better,” he said.

"I want to learn stories from other people and share my own thoughts to understand how they see things the way they do.”

After completing SYLP one, Mr Silva said he hoped to make a stronger impact in Roma as a leader.

"By completing SYLP one, I will be able to bring skills back to the community,” he said.

"In the future I hope to undertake the remaining courses and make a bigger impact in Roma.”

When asked about what the future beyond SYLP holds, Mr Silva had a simple answer. "I don't plan the future, I do what I can and take steps to make myself better,” he said.

"Life goes on, so just go with the flow.”
