A tale of two Cities sees boys in blue victorious
RUGBY LEAGUE: With town pride and bragging rights on the line, Cities towered above the rest by taking out double premierships in the Roma and District rugby league grand finals.
Not willing to be overshadowed by the reserves boys who secured a 26-18 victory over Mitchell Magpies, A-grade Cities dug deep to triumph against their fiercest of foes, the Wallumbilla/Surat Red Bulls.
A-grade player of the season Brendan Grulke said he was ecstatic to play in a long-awaited premiership game before he hung up his boots for good.
"I'm still in a bit of shock at the moment with the win," Grulke said.
"I've been playing for Cities since 2013, but missed out on three grand finals so to finally get a premiership, with this award on top of it, is just phenomenal.
"This was my last season before I retired, so to go out on a good note like this, it's pretty special."
Grulke attributed the team's powerhouse performance to the fire in their bellies for the silverware, which led to them dominating the Red Bulls in a 30-10 victory at Bassett Park on Sunday.
"It's been a real lead-up to this game. A lot of the fellas are finishing up this year so we all wanted to finish on a high and play for each other," he said.
"The Red Bulls had beat us in two out of three games throughout the season, so we were going in as underdogs.
"We knew we had the team to beat them, it was a matter of not second guessing ourselves and just going in and getting the job done. We tackled well and really fought to win it, and I couldn't have asked more from the boys in my final season."
