Royal Flying Doctor Service new base in Roma

ROMA Airport will have a new $1.4m Royal Flying Doctor Service base by the middle of the year.

The new base will provide covered facilities for crew and aircraft involved in inter-hospital transfers and aero-medical taskings to and from the Roma region.

RFDS CEO Nino Di Marco visited Roma on Monday to view the progress of construction.

"Patients transferred by ambulance to local hospitals will be able to take advantage of a new patient transfer lounge while awaiting the arrival of a transfer aircraft, instead of remaining in an ambulance or on the tarmac," he said.

Three pilots will be based at the new hangar and RFDS pilot Matt Joppich was optimistic about the development.

"It will be a lot better for the patients and the doctors," he said.

Last year 254 RFDS landings and more than 200 patient transfers took place at Roma Airport.

Mr Di Marco said he was delighted that these much needed facilities are under way in Roma and the new infrastructure will allow the RFDS to expand its services in the region.

The development, which is being built by Lanskey Constructions, was based on a similar hangar currently under construction at Charleville Airport.

These bases form part of a strategic network to support the delivery of quality health care in regional and remote areas across Queensland.

The RFDS emergency retrieval service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has expanded to provide critical service to those who live in rural and remote areas.

Support for the new Roma base has come from the Federal Government's Health and Hospitals Fund which is investing in health facilities in regional Australia.
