A legacy to hard work
Netball: The $1.3million state-of-the-art Maranoa Netball Precinct that has been years in the making was officially opened at the weekend.
The event included the dedication of the Martine Waldron Clubhouse, in memory of Mrs Waldron's dedication and commitment to junior sport across the region.
Master of ceremonies, Cr Cameron O'Neil said the future of sport in our region was looking bright.
"I know the netballers are extremely proud to have this state-of-the-art factility right here in the Maranoa.”
Cr O'Neil described Cr Peter Flynn, portfolio chair for youth, recreation and sport, as a champion around the council table over the years for this particular project.
Cr Flynn said the precinct would be a great asset for the entire region for many years to come.
"What I didn't realise was the amount of support that would be needed, and the amount of hurdles that would have to be jumped to get where we are,” he said.
"There was a feeling that this was a pipe dream, that this would never happen, but here we are.”
Cr Flynn also paid tribute to Mrs Waldron, whose family was in attendance on the day.
"Many great things will be said about Martine Waldron, and she thoroughly deserves the recognition that she receives,” he said.
"Netballers, this is yours to use. Enjoy it, be proud of it, and make the most of it. And make sure that you endure the lifelong friendships that you're going to make while playing netball.”
Maranoa Netball Association president Kayleen Hall said the precinct's opening would be marked in the association's history books.
"One of our main aims...was to give young people in our community the opportunity to represent their region, and be given the same opportunities as those in the big cities.”
