MARANOA Mayor Rob Loughnan has slammed insurer Suncorp's latest announcement on insurance premiums in Roma as having no impact and helping no-one.

Last week, Suncorp announced insurance premiums in Roma would reduce by up to 70% if a flood levee was built.

However Cr Loughnan said Suncorp should immediately reduce the special premiums it tried to impose on Roma and Emerald flood victims.

"The 70% decrease it is crowing about is simply a part reversal of the significant increases it has imposed over the past few months," Cr Loughnan said.

"I also think it should pay back every cent of those additional premiums to clients in the event that a further flood is not forthcoming."

Cr Loughnan said Suncorp achieved a public relations coup two years ago when it introduced compulsory flood insurance for Queensland.

"That's where the concept should have stayed - statewide cover for flood and disaster events with premiums fluctuating to reflect the overall risk," he said.

He also said Suncorp should get rid of inconsistencies on local premiums.

"To see medium risk properties receiving 1000% increases is inappropriate given rental and accommodation stresses in this region," he said.

"To hear another client has received no increase because he owns another property in Brisbane that did flood demonstrates the inequity of this approach."

Natasha Fenech, executive general manager for Suncorp Insurance would not say whether the bank would wait until the levee was complete before fully reducing premiums.

"Suncorp Insurance will continue to work with Maranoa Regional Council and all levels of Government to see the proposed flood mitigation measures developed, and will continue to review new policies and premium prices as the plans progress," Ms Fenech said.

Cr Loughnan said he was disappointed Suncorp kept changing the goalposts.

"Initial advice was it would review its approach when it could see a strategy and timelines for mitigation," he said.

"It then told me it would reconsider when it could see the first soil being turned on construction and now, predictably it has alluded to the goalpost being the construction of a levee."
