Best value for money Australian wines

THE silly season is done and the credit card statements are coming in. It might be time to tighten the belt financially, but you still want to enjoy your glass of vino.

Luckily, Australian wine producers are making value for money wines that will still leave you with change from a $20 note.

Look for well-known, established brands, especially those from family-run vineyards, or Mediterranean varieties from new producers in the "workhorse" vineyard areas like the Riverina.

Tahbilk, Marsanne, Nagambie 2015

Five generations of the Purbrick family run this living monument in Victoria, with some of the oldest marsanne vine plantings in the world. Summery perfume of fresh tropical fruit, lemon zest and a hint of jasmine lead into crisp, lean refreshing flavours. Strikes the perfect balance with light fruit and acidity. Serve with flash-fried squid and a squeeze of lemon.

Deakin Estate, Shiraz, Red Cliffs, 2015

Attractive smells of spicy blue plums, meaty paté, camphor and a sweet rocky road choc/marshmallow. Easy flavours of plum jam and red berry jus and doesn't rely on being too alcoholic or too sweet. There's a small amount of tannin, enough to handle spiced kangaroo kebabs on the barbecue or crisp salami and rocket pizza.

Calabria, Private Bin, Montepulciano, Riverina, 2013

The full name of this grape is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, originally grown in the central and south regions of Italy, producing full flavoured, fruity wines. The Calabria family produce Mediterranean varieties for keen prices. Lovely nose: red berries, fruit cake spice, sandalwood and coffee. Lovely full mouth feel and backed by chalky tannins, it will match a juicy roast lamb shoulder.
