$11,000 raised for chaplain programs across region
IT MIGHT not be divine intervention, but a donation of $11,000 from fundraising is being welcomed as a miracle for chaplains in regional communities.
With chaplains around Roma, Wallumbilla and Mitchell facing a number of setbacks, a major donation from KHB and an anonymous source is being reallocated back into the chaplaincy committee to keep them in schools.
A total of $11,000 was raised, with the Wallumbilla P&C committee also contributing $1500 to the donation.
Chairman of the Local Chaplaincy Committee Mark Westbrook said it was a welcome move from the community, and praised those involved with making the donations.
“The hard part is the government is cutting money from the program anyway, but this is a great donation that is helping the community,” Mr Westbrook said.
“It really goes to show how much the schools in the region value chaplaincy and their work with the students.”
The Federal Government flagged cuts to chaplaincy programs earlier this year, with some programs in New South Wales and Queensland unable to secure funding for their 2016-17 programs.
It means that the number of hours for local chaplains in schools could be cut back.
Mr Westbrook said the donations would go towards keeping the local chaplains in schools and helping them continue their service.
“Both sides have said they will try to continue their service to the school, despite these cuts being flagged early on; it’s all about a faith-based network, not only for the students, but the teachers as well,” he said.
“To have companies step up and raise money for their services is really encouraging.
“It shows that when the community rallies together, great things come out of it.
“The committee is still looking for more funding to fully support the chaplains, but this is a welcome donation.”
