BREAKING: FIREFIGHTERS in Roma have managed to quell a fire that gutted a house today.

The blaze started at 12.30pm at the Arthur St one-storey home, with the occupant and her two children escaping unharmed.

Emergency services arrived within 10 minutes, but much of the inside was destroyed.

Roma resident Nathanael Frawley, who was the first to call 000, was visiting a friend opposite the house when he noticed the smoke.

"We tried to get through the front door but it was locked so we went round the back and got the residents out," he said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by police.
